He was told by his shipping agent that they couldn’t proceed with custom declaration as the handbag lady didn’t give them the packing list, commercial invoice, etc..documents needed for custom declaration in China.

Then Patrick contacted the clothing lady via whatsapp, first she said ok then later ignoring all the messages. Another two weeks have past then Patrick called me urgently for help. I contacted the clothes supplier later, only to find that she had no clue about all the processes for export, the tags were also misplaced.

3. Lack of understanding of international business.

Most China wholesale fashion clothes suppliers in the markets have never been outside of China. Since mainland China is quite conservative, dictatory, most average people would never adapt to international business practices or understand where the customers come from, their culture, etc. Instead, they only see money in their eyes and expect you to adapt to their way of doing business.

4. Most stocks are Asian sizes.

If you are not targeting at Asian countries these can be great problems. Even some suppliers claim that they can make according to your sizes, however, they don’t have EU size charts and MOQ is not small.

The biggest disadvantage is size, color and quantity. Usually, the in-stock clothes are not complete in sizes, colors and quantities. For example, for one design of girls’ coat, the total stock quantity is 849 pieces, there might be 198 pieces for age 4-6, 285 pieces for age 8-10, 217 pieces for age 11-12, etc. And they also have five colors, white, black, pink, yellow, orange, the quantities for the same age, different colors are also not the same. Besides, some sneaky suppliers even put few pieces with minor defeats inside. You must take all of them so as to enjoy the discount.

In a word, if you are buying from the stocks markets, it is better to confirm first. Usually, sizes for people in China are one or two sizes smaller than UK size.

Logo

If you are buying clothes for your brand and you wish to put everything of your brand into the clothes including logo, water mark, tag, etc. then Guangzhou clothes stock markets are not the right option. But here is a simple way to solve the problem: you can have your tags made already, and then ask the China wholesale clothing suppliers to put on your tags. A rule of thumb, the common practice for buying fabric in China is one roll, usually about 100 meters or even more.

Last Saturday we welcomed a dear valued guest Mr. Khalid from Abu Dhabi.

In April we got an urgent mail from Khalid when he was looking for high end China clothes manufacturers during Canton Fair but found nothing, either with huge MOQ or poor quality. Leaving day was approaching so he sent us an urgent mail asking to meet, but unfortunately we were on a business trip in Kuala Lumpur. After one month of communication we’re glad that Khalid accepted our invitation to come back Guangzhou and visit our office.

In the morning we sent our car to pick up Khalid from Hilton Hotel to the main entrance of K11 office where I was waiting. At around 10:40am, finally we met after one month of waiting.

Our assistants have prepared everything ready for the meeting room, samples specially prepared for his markets, and my partner & Italian fashion designer Carlo was waiting in the meeting room.

Unfortunately it’s Ramadan, we couldn’t serve our guest a cup of coffee or water at his wills. But we respect every culture, religion and really admire the Islamic culture of fasting during Ramadan.

Carlo and Khalid had great talks about Carlo’s hometown Bari, Italian fashion brands, the miraculous development of UAE to Khalid’s high end men’s clothing line. The great part about the meeting was we came to know each other better than communicating via emails and whatsapp, especially Khalid’s custom made men’s wear business. We knew more about Khalid’s quality requirements, fabric choice, branding images, logo design, tags, packing, etc.

It’s best approached from Exit B of Shaheding subway station, line 6. Most sellers on Taobao or other online market places get the clothes from Shahe. As you can see many buyers walking around with black plastic bags of clothes, and there’re many shipping agents around targeted at taobao shops, offering insanely low prices on shipping around China. For example, the shipping fee for one t-shirt from Guangzhou to other cities in Guangdong would cost merely around $0.7 dollars, and it will arrive on the second day.

3. Zhanxi: Clothes Wholesale Markets around Guangzhou Railway Station 广州火车站服装批发市场

The clothes wholesale markets area around Guangzhou Railway Station is known to boast a comprehensive set of clothing wholesale buildings on both sides. Go straight towards Guangzhou Railway Station direction for about 500 meters, then you’ll see Building C of Guangzhou Beauty and Cosmetics Wholesale Markets.

The product range in Building C cosmetic wholesale market covers shampoo, perfume, eye shadow, curler, lipstick, nails, health, etc.

However, this is not the main market for export. Personally I think markets in Building C of Guangzhou Beauty Exchange Center are mainly for domestic markets.

For me, underground floor of Building A is the right direction.

Building A of Guangzhou Beauty Exchange Center is about 50 meters from Building C in Guangzhou Railway Station direction. It is a large scale three-floor wholesale market.

The underground floor specializing in virgin hair, curler, straightener, etc is the ultimate option for those who are involved in export business.

Go down from the escalator, you’ll find not only both sides of the escalator are displayed of virgin hair in Guangzhou, even the market is a sea of Brazilian hair at a glance.

Knowledge of Virgin Hair:

Quality: 5A is the best, and then comes to 4A

Price: Usually the price is the size minus or plus 10 rmb

For instance, the size of the Virgin hair is 22 inch, the price may be 230 rmb or 210 rmb depending on the quality.

Most of the virgin hair suppliers are from Henan or Qingdao, other provinces about 2 hours by plane from Guangzhou. If you have very large quantity, it is suggested paying a visit to Qingdao.

The importing of cosmetics is strictly regulated in markets like EU, US and Australia. All the cosmetic products made in the factories in China must not contain restricted substances, besides, they should be labeled correctly, or registered with local authorities, or it might lead to the products being confiscated or destroyed upon arrival.

EU

While importing cosmetics from China to European Union, it’s the importers’ responsibility to make sure the products comply with following regulations.

• REACH
• EU Cosmetics Directive
• New EU Cosmetic Products Regulations

The manufacturing methods of cosmetics should comply with the standards of GMP(Good Manufacturing Practices). GMP sets standards for the goodness of consumers and the environment. All the cosmetics shouldn’t contain any restricted chemicals or substances that might cause harm to consumers or to the environment. Before placing the order, you should submit the products for lab testing and verify they’re GMP compliant.

Besides, all the cosmetic products must be listed on the EU Cosmetic Product Notification Portal(CPNP) and labelled correctly before they’re allowed to circulate in EU.

• Sample fabric.  In almost every fabric shop you can buy few meters/yards of sample fabric first. The price of sample fabric is usually a bit more than wholesale price. For example, the wholesale price for certain fabric is 15 rmb per yard, if you’re buying 2 yards, usually you might be charged 20 rmb per yard, 25 or 30 rmb per yard depends on suppliers.
• MOQ. The MOQ for wholesale starts from one roll. As to how many yards of fabrics in one roll, it varies depending on the suppliers, sometimes you can get 50 yards in one roll while sometimes it can reach over 150 yards. Check with your suppliers how many yards you want, usually they’ll give you the roll with total of fabrics closest to your total quantity.
• Check the difference of paper tube. The most hated part is cunning businessmen never lack of ideas to take as much from you as possible. A rule of thumb in Zhongda fabric market that you would usually get much less than you order coz of difference in paper tube. For example, when you buy a roll of 30-kg fabrics, the supplier told you the difference of paper tube was 1.5kg, that meant you only got 28.5 kg while you paid for 30kg.
• Does your supplier sell by kilogram, meter or yard? If your fabric suppliers sell by weight, make sure how many meters are in one kilogram. Knitting fabrics are usually sold by kilo grams while woven fabrics by meter or yard.

1 meter equals to 1.0936 yards.

1. Rooms for customization are quire small. Some fabric shops require a very big quantity like several thousand meters for customizing color or pattern.
2. Usually less fabrics than what you paid for. For one roll of fabrics, usually you would end up paying several yards more considering the paper tube difference.
3. Losing competitive. Big brands don’t buy from open market places. They make their own fabrics. If you’re buying from open market place like Zhongda fabric markets that means you might be using the same fabrics as your competitors.

Even though, it’s not suggested to buy from Chinese clothes wholesale markets and here are the reasons why you should avoid China fashion suppliers from the markets.

1. At least 80% are middlemen.

Most China garment suppliers in the wholesale markets are just wholesalers partnering with factories. From our past experience dealing with China wholesale clothing stores in the markets, usually they had to call the factory to confirm some details even in front of us, when something wrong happened, they would blame the factories, the most common one is frequent delays in delivery time, “Sorry, we’re been pushing the factories but the factories are not happy to do it coz the orders are too small and too troublesome, they arranged big orders first”.

2. Language Barrier.

It’s very rare for China cloth suppliers in the wholesale markets to speak passable English. If you are buying several pieces or retail that are ready in the shops there isn’t any problem as you can also communicate just pointing to the clothes or use calculator.

Some suppliers do speak limited English but be careful when it comes to some complicated orders or processes. In Chinese culture, sometimes people tend to say “yes”, which means with respect I’m listening to you, they might not understand at all.

It happened to one of my friends Patrick from Barbados, he ordered some clothes from a clothing supplier in China. The lady speaking limited English seemed to understand and said ok to everything, so he placed the order and went back Caribbean. In one month his shipping agent picked up the goods from the lady. He was happily waiting for his clothes. However, after another month, the clothes haven’t arrived. He was told by his shipping agent that they couldn’t proceed with custom declaration as the handbag lady didn’t give them the packing list, commercial invoice, etc..documents needed for custom declaration in China.

Then Patrick contacted the clothing lady via whatsapp, first she said ok then later ignoring all the messages. Another two weeks have past then Patrick called me urgently for help. I contacted the clothes supplier later, only to find that she had no clue about all the processes for export, the tags were also misplaced.

3. Lack of understanding of international business.

Most China wholesale fashion clothes suppliers in the markets have never been outside of China. Since mainland China is quite conservative, dictatory, most average people would never adapt to international business practices or understand where the customers come from, their culture, etc. Instead, they only see money in their eyes and expect you to adapt to their way of doing business.

4. Most stocks are Asian sizes.

If you are not targeting at Asian countries these can be great problems. Even some suppliers claim that they can make according to your sizes, however, they don’t have EU size charts and MOQ is not small.

5. Complicated processes.

All the hassles dealing with Chinese clothes suppliers from wholesale markets can be great headache. Some suppliers are so sneaky. Nobody would risk losing money investing on new styles that they’re not sure whether can sell or not as fashion trends change swiftly. The stocks will be updated if they go well but it would take sometime for the factory to produce them. That means in an open market place when you buy stocks the chances are quite high that some items are not available, you might have to wait for an uncertain period of time to collect all the goods.
